As
a man, you never want to actually admit you can't fix something.
However, over the year I have learned that it's best to admit defeat
and call in a professional before you make things ten times worse.
Plumbing problems are one of those things. If you are not a fully
qualified plumber then just don't touch it! Trust me on this, it's
not a good time for anyone!
If
you have ever heard a banging sound when turning on your taps then
that is a warning sign that the pipes are in need of some
professional attention. The noise is often the result of pipes which
are loose and not properly secured. It might also indicate there I a
build up of lime scale or residue. The air chambers often get water
logged and are unable to absorb the impact of flowing water which can
travel at fairly high speeds. Over time this causes a large amount of
damage to the plumbing on your property. The noise is often referred
to as 'water hammer' and if you invest in a little preventative
maintenance as soon as you hear it then you stand to save yourself a
large amount of cash in the long run. The cost of maintenance id much
less than repair work if the pipes eventually break and cause
flooding.
Your
home water system is generally under great water pressure, whenever
you open up a water valve for instance switching on your faucet you
enable this water pressure to be released and water runs based on how
much pressure you release. However whenever you flip the water valve
back off the water pressure is ceased instantly and it has no place
to go apart from back where it came from, the energy in the water
pressure will journey in the opposite direction resulting in the
energy bouncing and subsequently making the pipes vibrate and rattle.
Most
pipes are fixed or braced against an immobile thing to prevent the
pipes vibrating. When your water lines are rattling it means they may
not be effectively anchored, this puts stress on water pipe joins and
can deteriorate and burst open as time passes.
Older
properties don't usually share the same high quality or volume of
fixings to help keep the water pipes steady. Modern homes use a
"water hammer arrester" to assist in stopping noisy pipes.
A water hammer arrester is directly set on the plumbing. Once the
water is switched off pressure will develop and pass in to the water
hammer arrester which can then disappear via a rubberized diaphragm
rather than in the water pipe.
It
is advisable to get rattling plumbing repaired as quickly as possible
in order to avoid additional damage and issues (vulnerable, burst
open or cracked plumbing). The local plumbing technician should be
able to put in a "water hammer arrester" on any high risk
plumbing.
